The term ta’wiz, commonly used in both Urdu and Hindi, is derived from the Arabic word taʿwīdh, which translates to “amulet” or “charm.” Its root lies in the verb awwadha, meaning “to protect someone through a charm or incantation.”

In various parts of India—especially in Rajasthan—a three-dimensional, talismanic container is also referred to as a ta’wiz. Often crafted in silver with intricate engravings and embossing, this pendant-like box serves as a protective amulet. These ornate containers may hold sacred items such as relic fragments, natural substances, or strips of leather or parchment inscribed with verses from the Quran or legendary sacred texts. These contents are believed to shield the wearer from harm.

This particular piece draws inspiration from the traditional form and symbolic essence of these historic amulets.
